Coffee Hugs – A Free Tutorial

Good Monday Morning to you!!  I thought today would be appropriate to post this cute little tutorial for you, and to let you know that these are available in my Etsy Shop, for your coffee in the morning!!

Make your own reusable coffee sleeve.

You will need…

Sleeve template

fabric scraps

your sewing machine

Fusible Batting

Velcro (non sticky back)

1.  Print and cut out the template, please be sure to uncheck the scale to fit box on print screen before printing, you want to print full size, if you scale it to print it may be smaller then the actual size of the template.

 Download Template Here

2. Prepare your scraps, if you want to have a patchwork piece, do all of this first.

3.  Place both pieces of fabric you will be using with right sides together.  Place template on fabric and trace out approximately 1/4" outside the template to allow for your seams.

4.  Using the template on the fusible batting, cut directly around the template, not leaving a seam allowance as this is not needed.

5.  Adhere your fusible batting to the back piece of your 2 fabric pieces.  If it doesn’t matter which one, then choose the one that you will likely put on the back.  this sleeve is reversible, but sometimes its nice to have one side that you use more often then the other.

6.  Place both right sides together and start sewing about an inch from the corner on the end that you will put the hook side of your velcro on your sleeve, sew back and forth the first stitch to secure it, so that when you turn your fabric your stitches won’t rip out.

7.  Continue to sew around your sleeve until you are back onto the end of your sleeve, sew a little bit more leaving about a 1-2" gap between where you started and where you are ending, and be sure to sew back and forth on your last stitch to secure it as well.

8.  Trim your corners to make them less bulky when turning, turn your sleeve right side out, gently pushing out your corners, i like to use the end of a large knitting needle.

9.  Press edges to make them crisp, you also need to make sure to line up the open section of fabric so that when you topstitch you can go right over that section to seal it up.

10.  Topstitch around sleeve about 1/8" in.  If you used a patchwork of fabrics, you can also topstitch all of that as well.

11.  attach velcro to the same end on both sides.  I wanted the big white flower to be outside so i made sure my velcro went on the back of that, and the front of the other end.

12.  Wrap around your favorite drink (mine is a soy chai latte) and enjoy!

Wrap on a small cup…

Wrap on a Large Cup…

Enjoy, and Happy Quilting!

How cool. Want to make one for my daughter. She’s on an Air Craft Carrier and I can’t exactly send her a quilt, not enough room, but this would be something Mom made that she will use everyday with her coffee or hot chocolate.

Interesting idea. A great gift for a coffee drinker.

Oh I just love this idea. Not only is this better than those cardboard ones, but I bet they would be awesome gifts for coffee drinkers and more protection. Thank you

I can’t wait to try the coffee sleeve. I think it will be a perfect thing to go with the Mug Rug. The Mug Rug saved my life this Christmas. Made several much simpler ones for gifts to teachers…friends…etc. Thank you so much for these.

  • This is a really neat idea, much better than the plain old brown ones that are available in the coffee shop. Plus, this is a much “greener” solution! My husband drinks much more coffee than I do. I wonder if he’d appreciate a manly one… maybe one with some footballs on it! :)
